Projects may involve hundreds if not thousands of welds of various types, positions and locations, resisting various loading conditions ranging from static to fatigue to seismic, made by welders with varying skill levels, working for contractors, fabricators or erectors with varying quality management, inspection approaches and personnel skills. A rational matrix-based approach considering these and additional factors is presented to assess and manage the project’s welding inspection tasks, providing guidance on the allocation of inspection personnel, their time and definition of their duties. The approach may be used by owners, engineers, specifiers, contractors, fabricators, erectors, inspection agencies and building officials to establish a unified understanding of the frequency and level of welding inspections to be performed on the project.
