Out-of-Position Weld Cladding Experimentation with Single/Twin-Wire GMAW Processes

Out-of-positon weld cladding with single or twin-wire Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process has been experimented, and the initial observations reported. Preliminary results indicate that, in contrast to that
of “flat-position” cladding, the feasibility of “out-of-position” weld cladding is much dependent on substrate surface position (upright or 45-degree downwards), process configuration (single or twin-wire), and welding direction (“horizontal” or “vertical”). Improved understanding with respect to out-of-position weld cladding can be beneficial to weld surfacing/repair of components with complex shapes; it may also provide some information beneficial to the development of weld additive manufacturing (which is gaining increased attention with wider deployment of sophisticated robotic welding processes).
